Most of us know how characterful Shetland ponies can be. Read that as meaning they are very naughty with very bold personalities. They are hugely entertaining and they can be very affectionate as well. They are one of our most popular children’s ponies. Many of you will also have seen them in the pony club events at the large televised or shows. These little ponies are incredibly fast and agile (when they want to be).

Shetland ponies are incredibly hardy and reach a height of around 10 hands. Did I say they’re known for cheeky behaviour? I really can’t say that enough.

As expected, this is a tough and strong breed built to withstand very harsh conditions. They’ve been used as working ponies over the years but most commonly kept as pets and children’s riding ponies. As with any small breeds, they need to be shown that you are in charge, or else small horse syndrome can develop. Because of their cuteness they’re often spoiled which can make them impatient and stubborn. They are highly intelligent. I can’t even begin to list some of the things I’ve seen Shetland ponies get up to. I can recall one little character who quickly worked out how to disable an electric fence, allowing him access into a more grassy section of the field.
